HERBS GARDEN

MY FAVORITE PART OF MY MANDALA GARDEN IS MY HERBS GARDEN. HERE´S A LIST OF THE HERBS I HAVE WORKED WITH SO FAR AND SOME TIPS AND USEFUL INFORMATION ABOUT THEM.

A great way to start growing your own food

If your plans for the future include becoming a super human and have your own self grown food supply, the first step could be a herbs garden in your kitchen, balcony or yard.

Mint

I have 4 varieties of mint right now:

Chocolate, Orange, Peppermint and Mint.

Does Chocolate Mint taste like Chocolate? Not really...it does smell like it, but the taste resembles a citric mint.

PLANTING

  • Mints are vigorous perennials that thrive in light soil with good drainage. Ideally, they prefer a moist but well-drained site, something like their native habitat along stream banks.
  • Most will tolerate some shade, and the variegated types may require some protection from direct sun.
  • For growing outdoors, plant one or two purchased plants (or one or two cuttings from a friend) about 2 feet apart in moist soil. One or two plants will easily cover the ground. Mint should grow to be 1 or 2 feet tall.
  • For the best growth in confined areas such as containers, topdress plants with a thin layer of compost or organic fertilizer every few months. Aboveground pots will need winter protection in cold climates.
  • In the garden, plant mint near cabbage and tomatoes—in pots, if possible, in order to prevent it from spreading and stealing nutrients from your crops!

Companion Plants to Grow With Mint:

Oregano and marigolds. In combination with mint, pungent, spicy oregano and marigold spread an aromatic forcefield across any vegetable garden, attracting pollinators and deterring pests.

Lemon Balm

So many of our drugs are from nature—aspirin, morphine, penicillin, and even Sudafed, and more.

Let’s go directly to the source of many of our health remedies. Herbs!

Lemon Balms is considered a “nervine herb” because it acts upon the nervous system to produce a mildly relaxing effect.

Growing lemon balm is very easy. The plants aren’t picky about where they grow and will grow in almost any soil, but they prefer rich, well drained soil. Lemon balm plants will grow in part shade to full sun, but flourish best in full sun.

Basil

Basil is both versatile and very easy to grow. It's one of the most widely used herbs in the kitchen.

Basil is delicious and great for digestions, so it's basically perfect for cooking.

I grow two varieties: Thai and Sweet.

One of the beauties of basil is there isn’t a real, definitive harvest time – just pick what you need as you need it. And the best part is the more you harvest, the more a basil plant will produce.

  • Plant basil in a spot that gets plenty of sun. 6 – 8 hours a day is ideal.
  • Harvest before the plant goes to seed, or “bolts.” When basil goes to seed, the leaves will often have a bitter flavor.
